Seaside, FL

We visited Seaside, FL a small city along the Gulf of Mexico between Panama City and Destin in Walton County.  It is a unincorporated master planned community and it is one of the first cities designed in America on the principles of New Urbanism.  New Urbanism is an urban design movement which promotes walkable neighborhoods that contain a range of housing and job types.  Seaside's roots started back in 1946 when the founder's grandfather bought an 80 acre parcel of land along the Gulf for a summer retreat.  Robert S Davis, founder of Seaside, inherited the land in 1979 and set out to transform this land into an old fashioned beach town with climate adapted wood framed cottages in the Florida Panhandle building tradition.  Every house in Seaside is colorful and different and the buildings in the town have been designed by several famous architects.  The population of Seaside is 2000 with a median age of 47 and a median income of $60,000.  The movie, the "Truman Show" was filmed in Seaside.  Seaside is a very active town with lots of activities, storytelling, theater, concerts, etc daily.   There is not any chain stores in Seaside.  There are over 50 unique shops, boutiques, restaurants and galleries.  Go hungry because there is a lot of great places to eat.  It was a nice day trip.

Here is an update on our trip; we are still waiting for the tires to be delivered.  They were not ordered on Sunday but are now ordered and should be delivered, at the latest, on Wednesday.  The manager of Walmart (yes, it was an actual manager!  I have never seen one before) did the order and gave us a discount due to issues that arose.  So, Friday morning we will be Westward Ho! headed for Tennessee!
