Lincoln County, NM

Lincoln County, NM was the Wild West when it was formed in 1869. At that time it accounted for one fourth of the entire New Mexico territory and was once the largest county in the U.S. It was where the wild west was the real thing with Cattle barons, Apache warriors and Billy the Kid. Fort Stanton was built in 1859 to protect the settlers from the Apaches. This area was attracive because it was an escape from the desert heat.
Currently, Lincoln County has a population of 21,224 and is 4831 square miles. The county is 100% land and 0% water. Its county seat is Carrizozo and its largest city is Ruidoso. The median income for the county is 33,900 with a median age of 44.
Lincoln county even had it's own war and it wasn't cowboys and indians. Tomorrow I will tell you about the Lincoln County Wars and Billy the Kid.
