Clarkdale, AZ

Clarkdale, AZ is another city in Yavapai county and is directly north of Jerome.  It also is about 1000 ft below Jerome.  The population of Clarkdale is 3836 with a median income of $35,000 and a median age of 46.  It formerly was a mining town but is now a retirement community with an eye for the arts.  Founded in 1912 as a company town for the United Verde Mine it was also built to be the most modern mining town in the world.  It had telephone, telegraph, electrical, sewer and spring water services.  It was an early example of a planned community.  The town center and business district were built in the Spanish Colonial style.  The entire town is a Historic District.  When the last mine closed in 1953 Clarkdale entered hard times.  It was bought and sold by several companies then in 1957 it was incorporated as a town.  In 1959 the construction of the Phoenix Cement plant was built in Clarkdale.  The cement plant is Clarkdale's only major industry.  There have been several movies filmed in Clarkdale including "Desert Fury", "Midnight Run", "Universal Soldier", "Benefit of the Doubt" and "Brothel".
Clarkdale is a small town that you pass through on your way up to Jerome.  It is a typical small town that was fun to check out.  It borders Cottonwood and Jerome and sits at about 4000 ft above sea level. As you leave town and enter Jerome you can't miss the cement plant. It is a nice clean little town.
