Visiting Museums

We spent most of the day on Friday at the South Carolina State Museum and the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum.  They are both housed in the former Columbia Mills Building that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Mill opened in 1894 and manufactured cotton duck cloth (a canvas-like material).  It was the first totally electric mill in the world.  The South Carolina State Museum (SCSM) was opened on October 29, 1988. The Museum has several museums under one roof.  The catagories are art, cultural history, science and technology and natural history.  The exhibits include life-size replica of the First Best Friend of Charleston, the first American built locomotive and the H.L. Hunley, the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat.  There is a recreation of an American Megalodon name Finn along with a giant beaver and armadillo.
Another portion of the museum houses the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room and Military Museum that was founded in 1896 and houses artifacts covering the American Revolution to the current military conflicts.  It also has a special section of General Sherman's march through South Carolina.
Both museums were interesting for a couple of reasons.  One, there were a lot of interesting items that told the history of South Carolina and two, it has been a really long time since Tim and I have visited a museum.  If you are ever in the Columbia area a stop at the SCSM is a good way to spent a day.
Today we are headed south to Jacksonville, FL.  Jenny and  Nate have been sick and I am hoping they are over it by the time we get there.  Here we come Carrie, Daniel, Jenny, Nate and Rory!
