Lake Michigan is one of the great lakes and the only one that is located entirely in the U.S. The other four great lakes, Huron, Ontario, Erie and Superior are shared with U.S. and Canada. Four U.S. states border Lake Michigan; Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan. It is the second largest great lake by volume and the third by surface area. It is believed to of gotten its name from the Ojibwa word 'mishigami' meaning 'great water'. Lake Michigan has a surface area of 22,400 square miles making it the largest lake entirely within one country by surface area and the fifth largest lake in the world. It is 307 miles long and 118 miles wide with a shoreline 1640 miles long. The lake's average depth is 46 fathoms, 3ft (a U.S. fathom is 6 ft making the lake 279 ft). It greatest depth is 153 fathoms (923 ft).
Growing up in the Chicago area Lake Michigan was a part of my life. Using the beaches in all four states, sailing and boating on the lake, walking the shoreline in downtown Chicago, riding bikes in Wilmette and Evanston and now staying right on the lake in Great Lakes. Every time I look out of my window in the RV or go outside and see the lake I just say, WOW. The best thing of all, it is fresh water; not salt water. The temperature of the lake right now is about 75 degrees. Not too bad, you can swim in it after you get use to it. In the evenings there has been a regatta going on and in the mornings I get to watch the sunrise, if I am up since the sun starts to rise around 5:10 in the morning.
We have enjoyed taking walks along the shoreline and Shadow was enjoying the lake until he broadsided by a wave yesterday. He came right out of the water and was done playing in if for the day. We have been enjoying our stay on Lake Michigan.
Hi, just found your blog and enjoy reading it. I see you are Thousand Trail members. We are also, so we will look for reviews or updates about their parks. Tried to join as a follower, but wouldn't let me join for some reason. I will try again later or when we have a better connection.
