Here we are in Pensacola, Fl. with the beautiful white sand beaches on the Gulf of Mexico. We are staying at the Oak Grove Campground on NAS Pensacola where the campground is located right on the beach.
We started out yesterday morning just about 7:00 am with an uneventful drive on I-10 until we were almost to Tallahassee and on the eastbound side of I-10 is a Semi Truck on its side. We could see the whole underside of the truck but we could not tell what may have happened to cause this accident. We stopped for lunch in Marianna, FL and who knew that the Arby's at the truck stop had a floorshow. As we were ordering our food we got to watch a Bounty Hunter (no, it was not Dog) come in and arrest a fugitive. The thing is the fugitive was an Arby's employee. It was not as exciting as it is on TV but it was a first for us!
We got to Pensacola around 1:30 Central time zone. By 2:30 we were set up and already out walking along the beach. Pensacola is the western most city on the Florida panhandle. It's population is 53,752 with a median income of 34,500 and it median age of 37. Pensacola is also known by America's First Settlement. It was established in 1559 by Spain until 1719. 1719-1722 French period, 1722-1763 Second Spain period, 1763-1781 British West period, 1781-1819 Third Spanish period, 1821-1861 First U.S. period, 1861-1865 Conferdate period, 1865-present Second U.S. period. Other nicknames for Pensacola are World's Whitest Beaches, Cradle of Naval Aviation, Western Gate to the Sunshine State, Emerald Coast, Redneck Riviera and Red Snapper Capital of the World.
NAS Pensacola serves as a center for Electronic Warfare and Cartographic training. It is home to the Blue Angels and is "The Cradle of Naval Aviation" because it is the primary training base for all Navy, Marines and Coast Guard aviators and Naval Flight Officers. The Naval yard was built in 1825.
Today Tim and I will be visiting the Blues Angels practice session, Naval Aviation Museums and a couple of Forts on the base. We will then go into Pensacola to see some more sights. It will be a full day of fun!
