The New Mexico Space Museum was built in 1976 and is dedicated to artifacts and displays related to space flight and space age. It is also home to the International Space Hall of Fame. There is an IMAX theater and a planetorium. A Shuttle camp is run every summer where kids come and learn all about rocketry. Yesterday was the last day of camp and we got to watch as the campers set off their rockets. There were some good ones and not so good ones. The displays outside of the museum are rockets and test track vehicles and most of the displays had been lauched from White Sands Missle range. Inside the building is four floors of exhibits dealing with space. Lots of satelites, a display of one of the inside area's of the space shuttle, examples of space food. HAM, the first live speciman shot into space and returned is buried at the museum. His spacesuit and space capsel are on display. There are some interactive displays too. Tim and I got the chance to land the space shuttle in one of the interactives. I crashed it twice. Tim made a perfect landing his first time. Outside there is a memorial to the astronauts lost in space flight. Apollo One, Challenger and Columbia disasters. There is a also a hiking trail. It is a must see if you are ever in the Alamogordo area.
Last night Jenny and I went to see "Cinderella" at the Flinkinger Theater. The local community theater put it on. The Almaogordo Music Theater is one of the oldest theater groups in New Mexico. It is dedicated to Musical theater and puts on four shows a year and has so since 1958. Their production of Cinderella was well done. The theater is huge and it was a sold out show. We enjoyed the show and after seeing it Jenny is interested in getting involved with the theater group.
Today we are headed to Las Cruces,NM. It is about 60 miles southwest of Alamogordo and is home to the University of New Mexico. Las Cruces is known as the "City of Crosses". I will share more information about Las Cruces in tomorrow's post.
Hi Ruth, nice blog. Wow, you are covering some milage! My wife and I started full-timing just over a year ago and she's got a blog going with a few hundred followers. I think lots of the blog folks follow each others' blogs. If you go to her site and join as a follower, and make a comment, I'm sure she'll reciprocate. Her blog is at http://midlifecruiser.blogspot.com. She is kind of nutty so I hope you have a sense of humor!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I meant to say that you could also find some other bloggers to connect up with, if you don't already know them! Happy Travels.
