Otero County Fair

Last night Tim, Jenny, Nathan and I went to the Otero County Fair and Rodeo in Alamogordo. We were joined by some of Nathan & Jenny's friends too. The fair was crowded but the parking lot was big enough to accommodate all the cars. We paid $7.00 each for the Fair and Rodeo. Tim and Jenny had never seen a rodeo so we decided to go early to the Rodeo to get good seats. We watched as the grounds were prepared and the horses and calves were brought to their storage areas. The Rodeo started with the Rodeo queen riding in to the song, "The Old Ragged Flag" and carrying an old ragged flag. The U.S. Flag and the New Mexico Flag were presented by two more riders. Then the action began. We watched the bronco riding, rope throwing, calf roped and tied, and the steer wrestling. We then decided to go check out the fair and get something to eat. The fair rides were the typical rides and the food was mostly local merchants and lot of clubs from the county. There were a couple of traditional food booths and a lot of green chiles items to choose from. No one rode any of the rides mostly because the lines were too long. We walked around the fairgrounds checking out the game booths, livestock, and shops. We did realize that we were a little spoiled with county fairs. Otero fair could not even compete with the Clay County Fair which we are all accustomed to. We did have fun and Nathan, Jenny and Tim enjoyed their funnel cakes. One side note, stay away from the Onion Rings if you ever attend this fair! I wish I had later last night! Going to the fair was a great opportunity to take in some of the local culture and just have fun Alamogordo style.
