Roswell, NM

Roswell, NM is located in the southeast portion of New Mexico. The population is 48,366 with a median income of 27,300 and a median age of 35. Its economy is from farming, ranching and manufacturing. It is home to the New Mexico Military Institute that was established in 1891. Roswell is most popularly known for having its name attached to what happen in 1947 that is referred to as the 1947 Roswell UFO Incident. However, the crash site where the incident happened was on a ranch about 23 miles out of town. The investigation and the debris recovered was handled by the local Roswell Army Air Field. The incident was quickly forgotten until the 1970's when "new evidence" was discovered and the controversy began.
Roswell, NM was once a quiet Ranching town until July 6, 1947 when a UFO came crashing down. The eye witnesses say the vehicle involved in the crash looked like a flying saucer. There was a victim that did not look human. The victim was smaller than the average adult but had a very large head with big eyes. The Army/Air Force account was that it was a weather ballon that crashed. Since the 70's Roswell has become a town dealing with controversy whether it was a UFO or a weather balloon that crashed.
The controversy brought curious visitors to the area that helped a struggling economy. In the 1990's after books and movies about the Roswell incident emerged it became affliated with UFOs and aliens. Roswell is having fun with the alien thing and many businesses use a UFO or Alien as part of their decor or advertisements. The streetlights on Main St are all alien shaped heads with big eyes. The International UFO Museum is in Roswell. It is a great museum if you are into the Roswell incident. I was a novice on the incident until I visited the museum and took it all in. Now I am wondering about the controversy too. One footnote, there were a group of young adults that came into the museum wearing tin foil hats. The hats were for their own protection. It was fun to walk around Main Street and see the aliens and flying saucers used. As we drove through the business district we noticed that McDonalds built their restaurant resembling a UFO, KFC has a big green alien greeting you at its door and even Coca-Cola got involved with Aliens on their coke machines located through out the town.
Roswell is a fun town to visit especially if you follow UFOs. There is a festival in July every year honoring UFOs which is a lot of fun. I did not attend it but Jenny and Nathan did and said it was great especially with everyone walking around town dressed as aliens. It was a day full of UFO fun but we did take in some culture when we visitied the Roswell History and Art Museum. It had been years since I was in an Art Museum and Tim and I enjoyed looking at the paintings, wondering about some of the "Art" and keeping cool. What a fun day!
