Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is made up of more than 2400 five pointed terrazzo and brass stars embedded in the sidewalks along 15 blocks of Hollywood Blvd and 3 blocks on Vine St,  The stars are permanent public monuments to achievements in the entertainment industry.  There are five categories under which "stars" are given a star on the Walk of Fame and a "star" can have more than one star on the Walk of Fame if they qualify under the other categories.  The brass plates represent these 5 categories along with the percentage rate of the stars:  Classic Film Camera - Motion Pictures - 47%, Television Receiver (TV) - Broadcast Television - 24%, Phonograph Record - Audio recording or Music - 17%, Radio Microphone - Broadcast Radio - 10 %, and Comedy/Tragedy Masks (added in 1984) - Theater/Live Performances - 2%.  Actors, Musicians, Directors, Producers, Musical, theatrical, fictional characters and radio personalities are among the stars on the Walk of Fame.  The Walk of Fame was created in 1958 as a tribute to artists and other significant contributions within the entertainment industry.  On February 8, 1960 the first 9 stars that were placed on the Walk of Fame were Joanne Woodward, Olive Borden, Ronald Colman, Louise Fazenda, Preston Foster, Burt Lancaster, Edward Sedgwick, Ernest Torrence and Stanley Kramer.  The family with the most stars is the Barrymore Family: John Barrymore, bother Lionel Barrymore, sister Ethel Barrymore, uncle Sidney Drew, John's son John Drew Barrymore, and John's grand daughter Drew Barrymore.  There are several common last names on the Walk of Fame but the most are 12 Jones, 7 Smiths, 14 Moores and 15 Williams'.
The 3 1/2 mile walk along the Walk of Fame is a good workout and can take at least half a day especially if you stop and take pictures.  There is a map you can buy that will list the star's name and the address of where it is placed.  I did not bother with one since I knew I would be walking the whole thing anyway.  There are also blank stars that are pre placed for future stars.  Who knows who may be next?  The Walk of Fame is the biggest tourist attraction in the Los Angeles area.  It attracks 10 million tourists annually.  There are people dressed up as famous stars or characters that you can get you picture taken with for a fee.  It was great day and if you are ever in Hollywood it is something you have to visit.
Today we are going to Oceanside, CA as our final stop for our East to West Coast journey.  We will be in Oceanside until Oct. 27th when we will begin our West to East Coast journey home. At the bottom of the blog I have posted some of the locations we will visit on our journey home.  The pictures of the stars I have posted is just a small portion of the amount of pictures I took.
