Temecula, CA

Temecula, CA is a southern city in Riverside County.  It was our final stop before heading to Oceanside.  Its population is 100,097 with a median income of $75,400 and a median age of 33.  Temecula just happens to be equal distance from San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange County and has been growing as a residential city due to this.  It was incorporated in 1989.  Temecula means "the place of the sun" in Indian and the current city has been inhabitited since the early 17th century.  It was a quiet area of southern California until the Mexican-American War where a bloody battle took place.  In Jan 1847 there were over 100 Mexicans killed in a very short period which is now known as the Temecula Massacre.  In 1857 a state stage coach line was started that ran from Warner Ranch to Colton.  The stop became so popular that in 1859 the second Post Office in California was established in Temecula.  The first and only Post Office in California at that time was in San Francisco.  Temecula continued to be a popular stop durning the 1880s with the Railroad building a stop but then the area stopped growing and just became a farming community.  In the early 1970s Temecula began to grow wine-making grapes in five different locations in Temecula.  This was the start of Temecula becoming wine country.  Currently is has more that 30 wineries and more than 3500 acres of producing vineyards.  The wineries have become a big tourist attraction and due to its location is a great week end hangout for several tourists.  Old Town Temecula is a small area in Temecula with historic buildings dating back from the 1890s and now houses antique stores, hotels, boutiques, gifts and collectibles shops.  It is also a popular area for Hot Air Ballons and Temecula's Hot Air Balloon festival is an annual event. It is a beautiful area and a full day of fun!
