San Clemente, CA

San Clemente, CA is a city in southern Orange County.  The population is 63,522 with a median income of $87,200 and a median age of 39.  It is known for its ocean, hills, mountain views, a pleasant climate and spanish colonial style architecture.  The slogan of the city is "Spanish Village by the Sea".  In 1925 former Mayor of Seattle, Ole Hanson, had envisioned an area of land, 2200 acres, to develop a Spanish style coastal resort town.  With the help of a syndicate headed by Hamilton Cotton the acres were purchased and a  town was built.  In 1928 it was incorporated as a city.  All the architecture had to Spanish colonial with red roof tiles.  That ordinance is basically still in existance today.  San Clemente's growth had been steady except for one year when one event occuried which accelerated its growth and reputation.  In 1969, President Richard Nixon purchased a Spanish Mansion in the southern area of the town.  The mansion was built by Hamilton Cotton in 1927.  It became known as the "Western White House".
Today, all of San Diego County along with other counties in California will be participating in the "Great Shakeout".  At 10:20, all communities taking part in this event will have one huge Earthquake drill.  Instructions will be given and practiced on what to do in case of an earthquake and what to do during and after a huge Earthquake.  I will give you an update tomorrow on how it went!
