Springfield, LA

As we crossed the Mississippi River we knew we were in the South!  We drove miles over bayous and waterways.  I had forgotten how much of Louisanna is wetlands.  "America's Wetlands" was posted on the sign  "Welcome to Louisanna".  It is pretty much true!  We stayed in Springfield, LA for the night.  It is a town in Livingston Parish with a population of 395.  The median income is $28,100 and the median age is 41.  The city's motto is "where everybody is somebody".  It was the parish seat from 1835 to 1872 and was slatted to become a big city due to its waterways that lead to the Port of New Orleans.  The railroad had plans to place a station in Springfield but then the railroad rerouted and went through Hammond (12 miles away).  That kind of put the end to the growth of Springfield.  The parish seat was moved to Hammond for a while but then made a permanent move to Livingston.
We stayed at Tickfaw State Park in Springfield and it was a little tough to find.  Our GPS was guiding us to it when all of a sudden a "FATAL ERROR" pop up on the screen and the GPS shut off.  Okay, we were deep into the Louisanna woods on a two lane road and it was at dusk.  I am pretty sure I heard banjo music.  It was getting dark and we were trying to get to the campsite before they closed the state park  gates.  We pulled over and asked a citizen of Springfield where the state park was.  After we were back on track our GPS came back up and guided us the rest of the way. After our GPS died  I did pull up the directions on the internet but you know you are in a small town when the directions say "turn right at the Baptist Church".  We made it just as it got dark!
Today we head to Panama City, FL.  We love Panama City and spend a week or two there every year for vacation!  We usually stay at St. Andrew's State Park but this time we will be staying on the Naval base.  There will be a visit to Pineapple Willy's!  Two days and we will be home and our journey will end...for a couple of weeks!  Then a new journey starts!
