Zolfo Springs, FL

Zolfo Springs, FL is a town in Hardee County.  The population of Zolfo Springs is 1659 with a median income of $11,400 and a median age of 30.  When you drive through Zolfo Springs it is just a very small town with a couple of Mexican restaurtants, a Mexican supermarket, a gas station, a few small shops and a Dollar General.  The town has a look and feel of being worn down.  I did notice that the supermarket does a pretty good business due to the buses of farm/orchard workers being brought to town to shop.  There were at least three school buses loaded with customers.  In the early 1800s a crew of Italian and Spanish men came down Peace River dredging for phosphate when they arrived at the spring that smelled strongly of sulphur.  The Italians named the spring Zolfo for the sulphur.  The area was referred to Zolfo from then on.
Early in the 1900s Zolfo became a depot stop for the railroad and in 1909 it was incorporated and the town changed it's name to Zolfo Springs. Pioneer park is located in Zolfo Springs.  It is a larger park that borders Peace River and has camping, a 8.5 acre lake for fishing, wooded areas, picnic areas and two museums.
We will visiting Pioneer Park this week so check back for more about it.
We watched both football games yesterday and I was very surprised about the Packers.  I really thought they would breeze through the playoffs and be a superbowl team but I guess the Giants had other ideas.
Sorry to all the Packer fans!  So with the Packers out I think a 49ers/Ravens Superbowl would be fun since both head coaches are brothers.  That could be an intereting match up!
We took a bike ride all around Thousand Trails and have found a very nice section along the river that would be a great spot to get a sand sifter and look for shark's teeth.  The river is suppose to be loaded with them.  Now if I could only  get past how cold  the water is!
