I spent the week end in Lake Geneva, WI and as one friend put it, there seems to be a lot of family history there, there is! The Colley family has been spending summers in Lake Geneva since 1909 and it continues through today! I was at my cousin Rob's house (formally my Grandmother's home).
He and his family, Becky, Robbie and Katie, were holding the Morris and Jeanette Eppley Memorial (my Aunt and Uncle) Swim and Diving Meet. My Aunt and Uncle were swimmers, most of the family are, and after Lake Geneva City quit holding meets they started the swim meets at the Lake Geneva Beach Association, where the family's summer home is. My cousin Rob has continued the yearly meet after both my Aunt and Uncle passed away and this year I got to be involved in it. My brother Ford also helped along with my cousins Don and Roger and their families. Swim lanes were set up and swimmers and divers as young as 4 and as old as 80 participated in the meet. It was so much fun! After the meet Rob and Becky had a BBQ for the family where I saw 2nd, 3rd and 4th cousins. It truly was a family event. I spent every summer at my Grandmother's house and use to participate in the swim meet and other activities up at the lake. It was good to be with so much family again.
After the BBQ, I headed over to my brother Ford's cottage at Norman B Barr Camp. Barr Camp has been existence since 1909 when Rev Barr started a camp for less fortunate people from Chicago. My Great Grandfather, C B Colley was on the board at Barr Camp and helped keep the camp going by donations and fund raisers. Through the years it became a Christian family camp where families built cottages while having dormitories for under privilege children who attended the camp. Today it is still a Christian camp that holds Sunday services and activities on the week ends and a Christian camp for kids during the week. My family had a small cottage at Barr Camp for years until my Dad passed away. I have so many wonderful memories of Barr Camp and it was so good to be back. My brother Ford now has a new cottage at the camp and it is really nice. Ford made dinner Saturday night and we (Ford, Nicki, Dave, James and I) sat on the front porch and talked the night away. Sunday morning we went to Breakfast at Millies, a great restaurant that also has unique shops surrounding the restaurant. Afterwards, we went back to the cottage and Tim joined us. We went swimming, visited the candy store for ice cream and looked around the dinning room at the old pictures of the Barr Camp. Ford continued the tradition of learning how to swim in the lake with James who did really well. It was good to be back at Barr Camp especially with my family.
Overall, it was a great week end and one that I will cherish for years. Spending time at my favorite lake with my family doing most of the same things I did as a kid was great! What a way to spend a week end! Thank you Ford, Nicki, Dave, James, Rob, Becky, Roger, Don and the rest of the family for a memorable weekend!
