Reed Point, MT is a town in central Montana in Stillwater County. It is a census-designated place. Population 193 with a median income of $36,100 and a median age of 48. Reed Point is a quiet town just off of Interstate 90. In the early 1900s Reed Point was a prosperous town with 54 businesses and new homesteads being claimed. Eventually the acres needed for more new homesteads ran out and settlers starting moving west for more land. That started the slow demise of the town. Today it is a town that looks like an old west town and every year Reed Point holds the Great Montana Sheep Drive over Labor Day week end where sturdy Montana bred woolies charge down Main Street for six blocks. Some have compared this to the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona, Spain. Along with the Sheep drive there is a parade featuring floats and the Shriner's band and lots of food and drink!
We are staying at the Old West RV park that is right off the highway and also in downtown Reed Point. At one time, this was a cool town and the old buildings are proof of it. We walked through town last night. The only thing that is open is a Saloon. It looks like the town is trying to redevelop itself. I can see a great farmer's market here with specialty shops someday.
On our drive through Wyoming and part of Montana we saw some beautiful scenery. The rolling grass covered hills in Wyoming was really beautiful along with the rock cliffs and rapid rivers in Montana. We have been following and will continue to follow the Yellowstone river. We are headed for Missoula, MT and expect bigger climbs through the mountains today!
