The Cascades Mountains in central Oregon are beautiful and today there was not any smoke so we could finally get a better view of them. One of the major mountains in the Bend area is Mount Bachelor. It was originally called Bachelor Butte but now it is called Mount Bachelor. It is a stratovolcano atop a shield volcano. It was formed 11,000 to 15,000 years ago and it last erupted between 8,000 to 10,000 years ago. It's elevation is 9,064 ft and has a ski area on the mountain. We were hoping to ride on the chair lift to the top but the ski area is closed to get ready for the ski season. Along the basin of Mount Bachelor are several lakes and to the south three mountain peaks called the Three Sisters.
It was a beautiful drive and the mountains are beautiful. We saw some great scenic views and more volcanic lava flows. We did not see any volcanic activity when we were at the North Cascades National Park or Mount Rainier National Park so seeing it in the central Cascades is still exciting to us. Shadow found out what wetlands were today. We let him off his leash to run in a field and it ended up being a wetland. He went for a swim and loved it!
Today we will be leaving Oregon and we are headed to California. We will miss the Pacific Northwest. We have really fallen in love with this area and we will definitely be back for another visit. We will be in California through the New Year. The Westward Ho! journey is starting it's sixth month and so far we have enjoyed every bit of our journey. Seven of the States we visited I had not been to so now I can say I have been in 42 U.S. States. Only 6 more to go! Westward Ho! and California, here we come!
