Nevada City is a city and county seat in Nevada County, CA. It is 60 Northeast of Sacramento with a population of 3068 and a median income of $36,700. It's median age is 44. It was first settled in 1849 and named Nevada, meaning snow covered, due to the the snow covered mountains in the surrounding area. In 1850-51 it was the most important mining town in the state. Nevada County was the leading gold mining county in the state. It became incorporated in 1856 and in 1864 changed it's name to Nevada City to stop the confusion with the State of Nevada, Nevada City's historic downtown area has several buildings that are on the National Register of Historic Places or are a California Historic Landmark. Gold mining was the economy during the Gold rush period but today tourism and government services is the economy. Nevada City hosts several festivals year round. It is a popular place for photography. Several Film and TV productions have been filmed in Nevada City. One of my favorite Hallmark Christmas movies was filmed in Nevada City, "The Christmas Card" which now, finding that out, makes sense why so many of the buildings looked familiar to me.
Nevada City was fun to visit and walk around. It is a big downtown area, as historical downtowns go, and we had a good time looking in all the unique shops. There are several restaurants too. So many of the buildings were from the Gold rush period and you could just imagine what it was like to be in a gold town. There is a beautiful Hotel, the National Hotel, that takes up most of a city block and a really nice Theater where live productions still take place. We had a great time taking in the history and we ended the day by getting two freshly made caramel apples at the Chocolate shop; they were good. If you are in the Sacramento, CA or Reno, NV area I highly recommend a visit to Nevada City. Today we head to Nicolaus, CA and while we are there we will be visiting Tim's Grandmother.
