Nicolaus, CA

Nicolaus, CA is located in Sutter county and it is where Lake Minden TT is located.  The population of Nicolaus is 211 with a median income of $31,300 and a median age of 51.  It was named after Nicolaus Allgeier, a local rancher.  Allgeier established a ferry at what became the town of Nicolaus in 1843 to cross the Feather river.  The town was established in 1850 and had a post office since July 28, 1851.  It is one of the oldest post offices in the state of California.  Nicolaus was an early major stopping point on the Feather river during the California Gold Rush.  It was a thriving town up until 1955 when a flood came through and destroyed the bridge that the highway used.  Since then the town has not been very prosperous.  The economy of Nicolaus is farming, walnut orchards and rice farms.  It does hold a big parade on Labor Day Week end annually that attracts people from all over the area.
Nicolaus is a tiny town but has lots of farms.  The Walnut orchards are beautiful.  We went into Nicolaus to use the post office.  I now know it is one of the oldest post offices in California but it is also one of the smallest post offices I have been in.  The building is small and they still use wood dividers to sort the mail.  It was quaint and kind of neat to see.  Nicolaus has a tavern, a grocery store and two churches.
