Yosemite National Park Part 1 - Tioga Pass

Yosemite National Park is located in the central eastern portion of California.  The park consists of an area of 761,268 acres and reaches across the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountain chain.  95% of the park is designated as "wilderness".
Tioga Pass is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada mountains.  State route 120 runs through it and serves as the eastern entrance of Yosemite, It is the highest highway pass in California and the Sierra Nevada at 9945 ft.  It was named after Tioga mine and its named originated from New York.  Tioga, in Iroqois and Mohawk means "where it forks".  The pass is subject to winter closure due to high snowfall.  It normally closes around the end of October and does not open back up until the end of May the following year.  There are several trails and some great scenery.
We decided to do Tioga Pass due to the fact that it is suppose to snow today down to 5000ft and that the pass may get closed.  I am glad we did.  It was beautiful from the trees to the mountain views.  There are several domes and several lakes and rivers.  We made a picnic lunch and decided to eat it on the shore of Tenaya lake.  We sat on a big rock and enjoyed the view as we ate.  Tuolumne Meadows was beautiful  but we did get into a little trouble while we were at the meadow.  Shadow was in the meadow with us and we did not know, at the time, that dogs were not allowed there so we got "talked to" by a Park Ranger.  Poor Shadow, he just wanted to run!  We then headed further to Tioga pass and along the way we passed so many domes and mountain scenery.  When we got to Tioga Pass there was a beautiful meadow there.  It was hard to believe how high up we were in elevation.  It was a great day and we still have several more days to go and so much to see.  Keep checking back and see what is next at Yosemite National Park for us.
