I am back home in Orange Park, Fl. I have lived in the Orange Park area now for over 20 years and would like to share some information about the area. Orange Park was founded in 1877 by the Florida Winter Home & Improvement Company. They named the town for the fruit growing industry but the crops were destroyed in the "Great Freeze" in 1894-95. Despite recovery of the fruit crops elsewhere the crops never came back to Orange Park. The population is 9075 (2009). The median income is $51,900 and the median age is 42. The main attractions in Orange Park are Golf Courses and the Orange Park Mall.

What brought me to Orange Park 20 years ago? The Naval Air Station Jacksonville (NAS Jax). My husband was transferred here with the Navy and we liked it so much that after he retired from the Navy we decided to stay here. NAS Jax is located just a couple miles north from Orange Park. During World War I the area where NAS Jax is now was originally a Army camp that was commissioned in 1917 where the US Army trained Quartermasters and where the second largest Rifle range was built. At this time it was named Camp Joseph E Johnston. It was decommissioned in 1919. In 1928 the Florida National Guard used it as its home base and was renamed Camp J Clifford R Foster. In 1940 Naval Air Station Jacksonville was commissioned and was the first Naval base in the area to be followed by Naval Air Station Cecil Field and Naval Station Mayport.

Today I will be busy getting my Mom's items ready to be shipped to California. Why am I doing such an exciting thing as soon as I get home?
