Menifee, CA

We are in Menifee, CA which is about 50 miles northeast of Oceanside.  We are no longer in San Diego County.  Menifee is a relatively new city in southwestern Riverside County.  It is roughly 50 square miles in size and includes the communities of Menifee, Sun City, Quail Valley, Paloma Valley and portions of Romoland.  It has views of three mountains (San Jacinto, San Bernadino -Mt Baldy, and the Santa Ana Mountains) and Lake Eisinore.
Originally this area was inhabitied by the Luieno & Pechange Indian Tribes.  In the 18th Century the area fell under Spanish rule, then Mexican and in 1850 became part of the U.S.  Farming began in the early 19th century and then in the 1880s mining began due to the discovery of quartz lode by a minor Menifee Wilson.  The city of Menifee was named for him.
Early development of Menifee began with Sun City in the early 1960s as the area for the concept of an active retirement communiity.  It has slowly become a residential community and several families have moved into this area from the Inland Empire and Los Angeles.  In 2008 Menifee became the 26th city in Riverside County. Its population is 77,519 with a median income $29,800 with a median age of 34.
Today, Tim and I will be checking out Menifee and the surrounding area.  Check back tomorrow to find out about our journey and see pictures.
