Columbus, TX

We encountered our first travel day of rain.  Through out our entire trip we have not had one day of rain while traveling until yesterday.   It rained and poured and at times it was  very hard to see.  We forgot about driving in the rain because it had been so long but we made it to our destination; Columbus, TX.
Columbus, TX is a city in Colorado County, Texas.  It is about 74 miles west of Houston and sits along the Colorado river at 206 ft above sea level.   The population is 3916 with a median income of $29,200 and a median age of 40.  It is the county seat and the town's motto is the "City of Live Oaks and Live Folks".  Columbus has been  a town for a long time.  It was established as a town in 1821 by some members of Stephen F Austin's Old Three Hundred.  In 1822 settler Benjamin Beason operated a ferry across the Colorado River known as Beason's Ferry.  The town contiunued to grow as more and more settlers from the east arrived and made it their new home.  In 1835 the town was officially named Columbus  because so many of the residents came from Columbus, Ohio.  It continued to flourish until the "Runaway Scrape" happened in 1836.  The Runaway Scrape is where a lot of settlers left their homes because of the Mexican Army in the area and Santa Anna taking the land for Mexico.  Sam Houston camped in Columbus during this time and when he left he burned Columbus down.  In 1837 the residents returned and re-established the town.  If you like football, three notable football brothers are from Columbus.  Aaron Schobel is a defensive end with the Buffalo Bills, Bo Schobel is a defensive end with the Arizona Cardinals and Matt Schobel is a tight end with the Philadelphia Eagles.  So much football talent in one Texas family, wow!
After we got to the RV resort and got all set up I needed to get some groceries.  We have found that there is usually a Walmart nearby where ever we camp, with a couple of exceptions, and Columbus did not fail us.  When I pulled up to it I felt like I have just gone back 25 years.  In front of me was a Walmart but it was a really old Walmart.  It still looked exactly like Walmart did back in the 1980s and it was not a super Walmart.  Luckily, right next store, was a grocery store.  I had to go into Walmart just to check it out.  The set up of the store was still the same as it was back in the 1980s.  I could not imagine what Black Friday was like in the store.  I did notice they had a layout of the store drawn on a poster board with areas marked where the customer could find where the doorbusters were located.  Some of the aisles were still blocked from Black Friday.  The people of Columbus are friendly and even at Walmart where I was greeted by every associate I encountered.
Columbus should have a second name, "the Windy city".  About 3:00 pm yesterday the wind began blowing non stop at about 15 mph with gust up to 25 mph.  It continued all night long and today it will continue but with gusts up to 35 mph.  We are rockin' in Columbus!
