Great Lakes Naval Training Center

Great Lakes Naval Training Center is the home of the US Navy's only boot camp located in North Chicago, IL in Lake County.  The Recruit Training Center, Training Support Center and Navy Recruiting in Chicago are all located at the base.  It is the largest training center in the Navy.  The base has 1153 buildings situated on 1620 acres and has 50 miles of roadway to provide access to the base's facilities.  One of the landmarks of the base is Building 1, also known as the clock tower building .  It was built in 1911 and is made of red brick and has a tower that stands 300 ft over the third floor of the building.  Recruit Training Command is an eight week long boot camp.  All enlistees begin their Naval career at Great Lakes which is nicknamed "The Quarterdeck of the Navy".
Great Lakes is a beautiful base with all the red brick buildings and the campgrounds being located right on Lake Michigan makes staying here a bit easier, even without having running water.  The base is always busy with recruits coming in at all hours.  The new enlistees can arrive at Great Lakes at all hours of the day and night.  As you travel around the base you see recruit classes through out drilling, marching, running, exercising and swimming.  It really is an amazing sight seeing all the recruits training to serve our country.
We had a great stay in the Chicago area and for me it will be a little hard to leave.  I have enjoyed seeing my family and friends and visiting all of the places where I grew up.  This leg of the Westward Ho! trip will be one of my favorite and hard to beat.  Thank you Chicago!
Today we head back to Clinton, IN and back to Horseshoe Lakes Thousand Trails RV Resort so that I can watch the Olympics.  I LOVE the Olympics and watch everything.  So, for the next couple of weeks we will still do things in Indiana but I will also be busy watching the Olympics!  Indiana, here we come again!
