Parke County, Indiana is located in central western Indiana along the Wabash river. The county was founded in 1821 primarily due to being a pass through area for General William Henry Harrison and his army going to and from the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811. One of his scouts found the area and it became a camp site for the army. It then became a transportation hub along the Wabash river and really started to grow after the completion of the Wabash and Erie Canal in the 1850s. Parke country was named for Captain Benjamin Parke who commanded a troop of light Dragoons at the Battle of Tippecanoe. He was also a delegate of Indiana Territory to the U.S. Congress and in 1821 became the US District Judge for Indiana.
Parke county has a population of 17,339 with a median income of $35,700 and a median age of 39. There are 13 townships in Parke county and has 31 covered bridges. It is known as the 'Covered Bridge Capital of the World". The Parke County Covered Bridge Festival is held every year in October.
Parke County does indeed have covered bridges and we have spent some time looking for them. They are not always easy to find but we have also found that sometimes you discover one that you were not looking for along the way. We have barely seen the covered bridges located in Parke county. Along the way we have been in some really nice towns too. More on that tomorrow.
