Yosemite National Park Part 4 - El Capitan

El Capitan is a vertical rock formation in Yosemite located on the north side of the Yosemite valley near its western end.  It extends about 3000 ft from base to summit.  It is one of the world's favorite challenges for rock climbers.  El Capitan got it's name from the Mariposa Battalion when they explored the valley in 1851.  It's nickname is El Cap.  There are several marked climbing routes and it was once considered impossible to climb but is now the standard for big-wall climbing.
I know that Half Dome is considered the most popular rock formation in the Yosemite valley but I was more impressed with El Capitan.  It's views are beautiful especially against a very blue sky.  While we were at the foot of  El Capitan we counted at least five  rock climbers.  I am totally fascinated with climbing El Capitan but it is one thing I will not be doing however if I could repel off of it I would.  There are all sorts of climbers but the most interesting to me were the speed climbers.  A new record was set in June of this year.  The climber ascended El Capitan in 2 hours and 23 minutes.  Today we are headed up to Glacier Point where some of the most beautiful views of the valley, Half Dome and El Capitan are.  I will do my best to document it!
