Yosemite National Park Part 5 - Glacier Point

Glacier Point is a viewpoint above the Yosemite valley located on the south wall of Yosemite valley at an elevation of 7214 ft.  The point offers a superb view of the Yosemite valley including Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls, and Cloud Rest.  There were two hotels at Glacier Point, McCauley's Mountain House (1872-1969) and Glacier Point Hotel (1917-1969).  Both structures were built from the tress that were cut down around the area.  In July of 1969 both of the buildings burned to the ground.  The National Park service decided not to rebuild and keep Glacier Point free of any obstruction of the views.  Glacier Point is another area that is visited by over one million people a year.  It is especially busy during the summer months and it is usually closed from Oct to May due to heavy snows.  During the winter is can only be reached by skiers or by snowshoes.
Glacier Point is a perfect area to see Half Dome.  I know I stated in one of my posts that I was more impressed with El Capitan than Half Dome but I now have to admit I was wrong.  They are both equally impressive and at Glacier Point the views of the valley and all of the surrounding rock formations is simply amazing.  An extra for us was seeing and playing in the snow.  It snowed last week and once we hit 6000 ft we started seeing snow.  We had to stop and play.  It was another incredible day at Yosemite and I am going to really miss visiting when I leave this area.  Yosemite was always something I wanted to visit but it was not on my bucket list.  It should of been!  I highly recommend  Yosemite at a must see area.  There is so much to do and you really need to plan to stay at least a week to see and do all there is to do.  I will definitely be back again!
